Pass, Set, Hit with 2014!

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

New beginnings mean new teams as well. The volleyball team’s season has just ended! With thirteen athletes and two coaches, it’s going to be a crazy ride through practices, games, team bonding, new-found friendships, new-found hatred, and finally, championships! With 6 wins and 4 loses this year’s volleyball team included: Ivy Stuart, Emily Ballard, Abby Van Vossen, Ashley Stattman, Calista Ekstrom, Amanda Arnold, Taylor Ashment, Isabelle Robinson, Aspynn Wade, Angela Wade, Victoria Kortesmaki, Emily Mercado, and Angel Martinez. Jesslynn Anderson and Becky Dushane are the coaches who are going to bring our school’s team to state and win first! This year there were 4 girls who were on the team before–I guess Coach Anderson is that amazing! Captains this year are Ivy Stuart and Isabelle Robinson. Do they help coach? No, but they do help bring our team together. Ivy Stuart said, ” I started to play volleyball in 5th grade.” When asked why she continued to play she replied, “Because it’s a lot of fun and it teaches you very good life lessons on being passionate about something and striving to achieve it.” I’m sure that if you asked any girl on the team they would feel the same as Ivy Stuart. With the coaches’ strategies such as pass, set, and hit, the team believes they can accomplish anything. Through thick and thin the team has been through a lot, but is still a team by the end of the day. Team bonding activities have been fun so far, the girls went to the suicide walk on September 20, 2014 to support. Coach Anderson was asked “What was it like with almost a brand new team?” She replied with  “It was probably one of the hardest things because there was so many new girls not only to the game but to a team and what a team really meant. I was happy with the improvements they made throughout the season and I’m really excited to have a returning team that will grow. That’s if everyone stays!” Strongly agreed Anderson, everyone should stay, other than the few who are graduating, that is.

Going to one of the games can be a blast, the team just needs some more support! Help cheer with them, they need your guys’ support and they love it! This year’s team didn’t bring home a trophy, but they sure did kick butt. All but 4 players were new, 3rd place is pretty awesome!! There were a lot of difficulties this year, other teams playing illegal, Mr. Gray calling Ivy out on everything during state, other teams complaining about them, and for what reasons? Simple! Jealousy!! Besides that the Lady Dragons were just amazing! They lost first play-offs and were at the bottom, but they sure did make it to the top. They won second play-offs which mean they made it to state!! State was Saturday October 25, 2014, they won their first 2 games and it was down to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Freedom Academy and City Academy were the 2 teams we had left to play, granted both teams were undefeated in play-offs. The girls had to work hard to beat City, but sadly, even though they tried hard, they didn’t quite make it. They watched as the scores got higher and lower, higher and lower, until finally the buzzer went off. DaVinci had lost to City. When asked, “How did you feel when your team only got 3rd place?” Coach had the response everyone on the team would be happy about. “I felt really proud of them they played really well and we were the only team that had to beat that many teams to be up on the bracket. I do wish we didn’t lose in semi-finals because that’s what really hurt us as a team.” Words of Wisdom from Coach as usual. So many girls are so excited for next year I know a few that are upset the season ended, that wish it could go on all year.
